Lernable

A case study
CO-FOUNDER
A 4 person start-up creating a platform where practical learning experiences, and passionate hosting opportunities meet. Believing that practical learning and human connection stand above the rest.

The  New Old Way to Learn

Lernable is a 2-sided platform that finally provides a go to place for any face-to-face learning experiences. From learning how to kickflip to career interview prep, we shouldn't limit ourselves to subscribing to an online class that 97% of us don't actually get through (yes that's a real statistic).

Equally as exciting is the flip side of learnable, empowering people to make a living from whatever skills they poured their heart in to. Doing what you love is more valuable than anything, so we connected the experienced and equiped, to the eager and invested.

This is how learning should be.

(01) How it works

When We Said Anything,

We Meant it.

01

Do What Matters to You

Go to lernable.com and scan every listing. Can’t find it? Let us know what you want to learn, and we’ll scour the earth for someone who will get you there.
02

Book a Host

Book 1 or 100. Learn how to code today, learn to make your own furniture tomorrow and draw in virtual reality the day after.
03

Meet the Future You

It's time to switch on. It may not seem like it, but just a not long ago this person set out to learn the same thing as you are now.

Benefits for Learners

Barriers Broken for Hosts

The 2 way experience

Ask questions, ask for clarification, ask for a refresher, when you are face to face you can do this freely.

Everyone is different, Learning should reflect that!

Contextualise your learning, where your host is coming from, and their journey, so they can best guide yours.

Save time... a lot of it

This is simple... Get the download on what is and isn't worth your time. Get the jargon translated, and the lingo learned.

Experience it, then invest

A lot of skills and experiences require equipment, and too often we find ourselves going too deep, or unable to take such large risk on gear we may or may not love using.
So when we they can, hosts will let you use theirs!

A new viable lifestyle

Make a living off your passions! This is a core goal for lernable and we went with the lowest service rate around (despite others telling us not to).

Money is just the tip of it

The experience of teaching others is to our benefit as well, reaffirm what you already know and realising new potential in your craft.

Your time is valuable

Give you the flexibility of when and where
Getting students that are geniunely engaged and invested.

The more the merrier

If what you love to do isn't the most mainstream, this is arguably the only guaranteed way to gain peers and friends.

Our 'why'

In 2017, four of us decided to commit every waking hour to Lernable we could.

1. To do something we ourselves are passionate about.

2. To allow for more people to live doing the same, not just as a "hobby“

3. Removing the chance in getting the peak learning situation, by bringing out the value in connecting people,

The Vision

Imagine listings and profiles for individuals for both unique skills and highly sought after staples like piano lessons.

The choice of pursuing a 2-sided marketplace allowed for both variety and rapid growth. At the time there was no home for people to find each other say to learn how to play the didgeridoo. By extension there was no place to to broadcast your availability to teach such talents.

The Research

Across all our interviews, elevator pitches and site visits, and research, everyone shared similar painpoint in their pursuit of passion.

Learning face to face
Allows for drastic acceleration of progress.
???
Everything from tweeting or posting on forums, people have no idea where to get help.
97%

Constant Considerations

We dedicated most of the first 3 months alone researching users interests, their current behaviours toward teaching and learning, as well as new practices that would need to be implemented.

Ensuring that the dynamic between a mentor and a learner, both during meetup and online, was productive and healthy was a challenge.

Highly focused on what information to give when, and to who. We also designed for the sustained use of the platform and motivate users to adopt this lifestyle.

Trust and safety were central concerns to the success of the platform.
Processes such as:
- mentor onboarding,
- learner onboarding,
- mediation,
- booking and post meetup

all required individual approaches.

Between a strong investment in brand, tone and imagery, we made sure that these processes were as efficient and effective as possible.

We also formulated strategies for user support, a business model, a scaling strategy and a 5-10 year roadmap.
